What is the medical cause of 'dazing off'?

the other day someone was talking to me while i was eating and i literally didn't hear anything they were said -- it was like i had dazed off into space for a second and when my mind clicked back in they had to repeat themselves - what is the medical reason for 'dazing off' what causes this? does it happen to everyone?
Answer:
There can be any number of causes for a temporary lapse of attention, like from a lack of proper sleep (you are tired %26 so is your brain), or stress (your brain is engaged in thinking about something else, possibly something that worries you, it is VERY difficult to maintain attention/focus when you are worried or thinking about something else). If it happens alot, it can be from a temporary lack of blood supply to the area of the brain which maintains attention, as in ADD/ADHD, or it could be just plain boredom. It is common, especially in this hectic, distracting world, but there are ways to learn to stay focused. Hope this helps.
There can be many causes for this my daughter is 8, she used to do this often , we thought she was just ignoring us like a typical kid buried in T.V. and she was also doing this at school , on Dec. 18th she had a seizure. We took her to a neurologist to find out that she was actually having constant seizures in the lower left lobe of her brain, she is now on medication for this. If it continues i would definitely get it checked out.
